Sankat Mochan temple

Sankat Mochan: Pilgrimage in Shimla

A well-known temple devoted to Lord Hanuman, located near the main road leading to Shimla.

The historical significance of Sankat Mochan Temple dates back to the 1950s when Baba Neeb Karori Ji Maharaj arrived in this tranquil and fascinating area for meditation. During his 10-day trip, he was so taken by the grandeur of this spot that he decided to construct a Hindu temple there.

In 1962, Baba Ji and his devoted followers, including the governor of Himachal Pradesh, undertook the task of constructing the temple as a matter of urgency. On June 21, 1966, the temple was finally consecrated. It was originally a tiny temple. With the passage of time, however, and due to a large number of worshippers, the temple has grown to encompass an area of 18,8 bighas. Currently, the building contains separate complexes for the idols of Lord Hanuman, Lord Rama, and Lord Shiva.

Despite several attempts, he could not be revived. Then, a respected priest informed Lord Rama that he needed a certain Sanjeevani herb to revive him. Hanuman was tasked with acquiring the plant from the Himalayas.

On a hilltop on route to the Himalayas, he encountered the sage Yaaku. Hanuman sat atop the peak and dispelled his worries concerning the plant. The mount was unable to support his weight and was reduced to half its original size. After gathering sufficient information about the herb, he told Yaaku they would meet upon his return to Lanka.

On his journey back, however, he had to fight a demon named “Kalnemi” who attempted to trick him, which cost him a great deal of time. In order to reach Lanka on time, he chose not to meet the sage and instead travelled the quickest path feasible. When the sage was disappointed, he considered meeting him in person to explain why he had broken the pledge.
